I resonated with Veronica's experience of being a woman of mixed heritage where the search for belonging and bridging across difference, across oceans and cultures becomes a way of being; her long playback arms ever reaching out to bring people together; Veronica making her home in playback theatre.
I remember her hearty embrace when many years ago, a group of black women attended a UK Playback Gathering - we knew that we had broken the spoken and unspoken rules... walking into an all white space we were visible and many of us had not been playback trained.
Without a beat Veronica, fluttered into the tension and created space and generously gave of her time and energy to teach us and the following year we formed Breathing Fire - Bristol Black Women's playback theatre company. Later, we raised money and paid for Veronica who became our loving trainer and mentor.
Veronica's kindness, playfulness, songs, heartiness and firmness was not forgotten and like True Heart, Breathing Fire is still alive and providing a 'home' for Global Majority people - serving our diverse communities and keeping our stories alive.
