Whose Face is it?

I wrote the following in the house programme of Face in 1998 when the work premiered in Hong Kong :

When Veronica asked me to direct Face, I hesitated for a while. However, I finally agreed, because her story not only belongs to her, but to us. It has witnessed a little known piece of Hong Kong history. If we can understand ourselves through the stories of others, the meaning of life will become richer, because we begin to develop, though only generically, a certain sense of history; and we begin to care about our collective past.
Autobiographical stories are often an important method of training actors in drama schools. On the one hand, personal stories can provide endless inspiration for actors; on the other hand, actors also need to keep a certain distance from their own stories, so as not to become too emotional.
The present is the continuation of the past and the beginning of the future. Looking back at the past and looking forward to the future will trigger mixed feelings. Memories become images, actions and words, and the images produced here and now will be very interesting.
Everything starts now.

Veronica,

In a hindsight, your story actually echoes that of many, especially today, though in a different form. Thank you!!! You have the love of many many people! Rest in Peace!
